These test or control pictures were known as “Lillies”. Hollywood legend tells us that one of the first girls was named “Lilly”. They were also called “China Girls” because some labs used ceramic figurines for the test frames.
They were film-studio workers or models who posed for what are known as color-timing control strips. Color timing was an essential process in films from the 1920s to the 1990s to establish visual continuity between shots that may have been filmed under different lighting conditions or on different film stocks.
These wonderful images are usually found on the countdown leader of motion picture film. They only appear for a few frames so in case you blinked here is set 1 of these amazing images.
